Dear Mr. Long,
In the Hong Kong "Telegraph" for Thursday, August 23rd, there is a long report of the trial of a slavery case. The report is not edifying reading for an Englishman. In addition to the report, I have a letter, the publication of which might involve serious consequences both to myself and my correspondent. In normal times I should not hesitate, but the case reflects sc seriously upon this country that I am hoping you might be able to do something without us having to give enemy countries further opportunities for sneering at our professions of interest in smaller subject races.
If you can spare re a few minutes, I shall be glad to do what I have done on other occasions, place the whole of my information before you and speak quite frankly.
Yours faithfully,
له
